The New York Yankees enter the offseason facing questions about how to reshape their roster after another postseason disappointment. While the front office has already secured continuity in one key area, decisions about the players who can help the club return to the World Series will soon take center stage.
The Yankees have announced that longtime general manager Brian Cashman will stay in place.

“Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has reached a new deal to continue in the post he has held since 1998, while owner Hal Steinbrenner blamed the players — specifically the offense — for the team’s playoff exit,” ESPN’s Jorge Castillo wrote.
Before New York turns its attention fully to free agency, however, it has received news about a veteran catcher who recently joined the organization while looking for another opportunity to extend his major league career.

New York Yankees Catcher Announces Retirement After 10 Seasons
On Wednesday, multiple reports indicated that 2023 World Series champion backstop Mitch Garver has decided that his time in professional baseball is over.

“Former Minnesota Twins catcher Mitch Garver has officially retired after a 10-year career,” MLB reporter Taylor Schwerz reported on X.
Garver, 35, made his major league debut with Minnesota in 2017 and later played for the Texas Rangers and Seattle Mariners. His career included a standout 2019 campaign with the Twins, when he hit 31 home runs and earned the American League Silver Slugger Award at catcher. He won his lone World Series championship with Texas.
His final seasons, however, were less productive. After joining the Mariners in 2024, Garver struggled to recapture his earlier offensive form.
“Seattle brought him back on a minor league deal and he cracked the Opening Day roster in 2026 but he was released in August after hitting .175/.302/.294 in 149 plate appearances,” Darragh McDonald reported for MLB Trade Rumors. “He was briefly with the Yankees on a minor league deal after that.”

New York Yankees Lose Catching Depth Option Immediately After Season Ends
The Yankees signed Garver to a minor league contract in August as they sought additional depth behind the plate. At the time, his experience and past success seemed like good reasons that the move was worth exploring.
Garver never established himself as a long-term solution in New York, and his retirement means the club will need to look elsewhere if it wants to add more catching depth for 2027. Austin Wells appears to be the organization’s everyday backstop for next season, but the Yankees must weigh their options as they assess the roster following their playoff exit.
For Garver, the decision closes a career that included a major award, a championship and a decade in the majors. For the Yankees, it is a relatively small offseason development — but another reminder that roster construction will require more than simply retaining the front office.
