Cowboys waive underperforming CB, promote Juanyeh Thomas, add Heisman-finalist QB

The Cowboys were back at work on Tuesday, refining the roster as they continue to look for ways to salvage a season that seems to be quickly going off the rails.

Juanyeh Thomas, who has played an increasing role in the team’s past three games in his second stint with the Cowboys, has been moved up from the practice squad to the active roster. The 26-year-old safety first joined the club as an undrafted free agent in 2022 and appeared in 37 games (playoffs included) through the 2025 season.

In March of this year, Thomas signed with Indianapolis but did not survive final cuts in August. He returned to Dallas in late September and was back in action five days later in Week 4’s game against Houston. The Georgia Tech product has played most of his snaps on special teams but got 11 defensive snaps last weekend versus Green Bay. Having used his three gameday elevations, the Cowboys were required to make a decision about Thomas, and he’s proven his worth since his return.

But the team had to make room on the active roster; cornerback Caelen Carson was waived in a corresponding move. Originally a fifth-round draft pick in 2024 out of Wake Forest, Carson struggled to carve out a role with the team over the next two-plus seasons. He made 45 appearances and eight starts wearing the star but saw his reps decrease significantly this year, logging no snaps with the defense since Week 3’s contest in Rio.
